American Ancestry pre 1776

The table below is our index to volume 2-12 of American Ancestry.

In 1887 Thomas P. Hughes produced a 12 volume series American Ancestry giving the name and descent, in the male line, of Americans whose ancestors settled in the United States previous to 1776. I have tried to find additional information about John Hughes and these books but have not been able to locate any details. Please let me know if you have any additional insight.

We have provided links to all 12 volumes both in digital and text version. Both the digital version and the text version are fully searchable and freely available at no cost. At the bottom of this page we provide a detailed example of how to search the digital version.

The digital version of theses books can be searched. In our example we will search Volume 1 for last name Kennedy.

To do that, click on the link for Volume 1 – Digital version.

Once the book is open you will see a search input box in the top right corner which is where we will enter the name Kennedy.

After you enter your search term and press Go the search results will be highlighted on the bottom of the screen using a little orange balloon shaped icon. In volume 1 there was only one occurrence of Kennedy, so only one balloon icon was shown. Had there been more occurrences you would have seen multiple icons.

By hovering our mouse over the balloon icon we can see a summary of the details.

From this summary we can see that Howard Kennedy can be found on page 60.

If you then click on the balloon icon, it will bring up page 60 can you can see the image.

To search the full text volumes, simply call up the book and once open press Control F which brings up a text search box in the top left corner of you web page.
